This packing list is for Kerala in the monsoon season (roughly June to September). It covers the specific challenges of travelling in a tropical rainy season — everything gets wet, humidity is intense, and your clothing and gear choices matter more than in dry season.
Waterproofing is everything
The core challenge of Kerala monsoon travel is managing constant moisture — rain, humidity, and the backwater environment.

Clothing
Kerala in monsoon is hot and humid even when it rains. Heavy clothing is uncomfortable. Light fabrics that dry quickly are essential.

- Quick-dry or moisture-wicking shirts (2–3, so one is always drying)
- Quick-dry shorts or lightweight trousers
- Modest clothing for temple visits (full arms and legs required at many Kerala temples)
- One set of smarter clothes for nicer restaurants or houseboat dinners
- Light cotton kurta — practical and respectful for temple visits
- Swimwear if visiting during early or late monsoon when some calmer beaches are accessible

- Anti-fungal powder or cream — fungal skin conditions increase in humidity
- ORS (oral rehydration salts) sachets for heat and hydration

- Any prescription medications with extra supply (monsoon disruption can affect supply)
- Hand sanitiser
- Water purification tablets or a filtered water bottle — monsoon water quality can be affected in rural areas
Electronics

- Waterproof phone case or dry bag
- Power bank — monsoon means indoor time, power cuts can occur
- Universal adapter (India uses Type D/M sockets; Type C is increasingly common)
- Sealed zip bags for all electronics when not in use

- Small notebook — some Ayurvedic consultation processes ask you to track symptoms

- Heavy cameras with no weather sealing — a monsoon downpour can destroy unprotected equipment
- White clothes — Kerala's red clay soil stains permanently
- Leather bags, shoes, or accessories — humidity and rain will damage them
- Too many clothes — laundry is cheap and available throughout Kerala
Packing strategy
Where to go in Kerala during monsoon
Munnar — The tea estates and hill scenery are spectacular in the monsoon. Some trekking routes are closed during heavy rain but the town and estates are accessible.
Alleppey (Alappuzha) backwaters — Houseboat trips still run in the monsoon. Some operators suspend services during the heaviest weeks. Check conditions with your houseboat operator directly.
Kovalam and Varkala — Beaches are rough and swimming is not safe, but the dramatic weather and empty beaches appeal to some travellers. Good for Ayurvedic retreats.
Wayanad — Forest district with waterfalls at their most dramatic in the monsoon. Check for road conditions in heavy rainfall.
