Who this guide is for
This itinerary is for someone visiting Rishikesh for the first time who wants a balance of riverside relaxation, a taste of yoga or meditation, and the Ganga's spiritual atmosphere — without committing to a multi-week retreat. It's also alcohol- and meat-free since Rishikesh is a holy town where both are restricted.
A note about Rishikesh
Rishikesh is split across two sides of the Ganga, connected by two famous suspension bridges (Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula). The Tapovan / Laxman Jhula side is more touristy with cafes and yoga studios; the Swarg Ashram / Parmarth side is more traditional and pilgrim-heavy. Both are worth seeing.
✦ Day 01
01
— Stage —
Arrival, riverside walk, and evening aarti
Morning — Arrive and settle in
If you've taken an overnight bus or early train, drop your bag, shower, and have a slow breakfast at a riverside cafe like Little Buddha Cafe or Beatles Cafe (yes, multiple cafes use the Beatles name).
Midday — Walk to the Beatles Ashram
The Beatles Ashram (officially Chaurasi Kutia) is a 20-minute walk along the river from Laxman Jhula. The Beatles stayed here in 1968. Today it's a quiet, partly-overgrown set of crumbling meditation huts covered in murals — atmospheric, calm, and excellent for an hour of slow walking. Small entry fee.
Afternoon — Yoga or massage
Drop into a beginner yoga class at one of the studios on the Tapovan side. Most offer 90-minute classes for ₹400–₹800. Alternatively, book an Ayurvedic massage at a reputable centre.
Evening — Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan
Take an auto across to Parmarth Niketan for the daily Ganga aarti — fire, song, and floating lamps at sunset on the river. Arrive 30–45 minutes early to find a seat by the water. Dress modestly. The ceremony lasts about an hour. It is one of the most moving experiences in India.
✦ Day 02
02
— Stage —
Foothills and reflection
Morning — Sunrise on the river or early yoga
If you can wake early, sunrise on the Ganga from the suspension bridge is quietly beautiful. Otherwise, attend a 7 AM yoga class.
Late morning — Neelkanth Mahadev Temple (or short trek)
Two options:
- Neelkanth Mahadev Temple — 32 km away by taxi, deep in the foothills. A famous Shiva temple; the drive through forest is the experience.
- Patna Waterfall or Neer Garh Waterfall — short, easy hikes from town, good for an hour or two outdoors.
Pack water and snacks; the heat can build by midday.
Afternoon — Free time and cafes
Back in town, lunch at Ramana's Garden Cafe (vegetarian, with profits supporting a children's home) or Bistro Nirvana. Browse books at the Ganga Beach shops, or sit by the river and do nothing.
Evening — Optional second aarti or early departure
If you have time before your bus or train back, the smaller Triveni Ghat aarti (Rishikesh main town side) is a quieter alternative to Parmarth Niketan.
