Who this guide is for
This itinerary is for a couple visiting Udaipur for the first time who want a romantic but practical trip — not a five-star palace stay (we'll get to those too), but the version where you can wander, eat well, and have time to actually rest. It assumes a 3-day window, which is the most common length for a short Rajasthan trip.
✦ Day 01
01
— Stage —
Old City, Lake Pichola, and sunset
Morning — City Palace
Start at the City Palace right when it opens (around 9:30 AM) — it's the biggest palace complex in Rajasthan and takes 2–3 hours done properly. Hire an audio guide or local guide; otherwise it's just a lot of rooms. Don't rush.
Midday — Jagdish Temple and the Old City
A short walk uphill from the palace takes you to Jagdish Temple — active, ornate, and a good break from the museum air. From there, wander the lanes of the Old City. Stop for lunch at a rooftop restaurant — Upre, Ambrai, or Jagat Niwas all have excellent lake views.
Afternoon — Slow time, or Bagore-ki-Haveli
Take a couple of hours off — the Indian afternoon is for resting. If you're not tired, Bagore-ki-Haveli is a small but well-curated heritage haveli with a folk-dance show in the evening (separate ticket).
Evening — Sunset boat on Lake Pichola
Book a sunset boat from Rameshwar Ghat at the City Palace. The 1-hour ride circles Jag Mandir and gives you the postcard view of the palace at golden hour. Buy tickets early in the day to guarantee a seat.
Dinner
Ambrai (lakeside, at Amet Haveli) is the most romantic dinner in Udaipur. Book ahead. Alternatives: Upre at Lake Pichola Hotel, or 1559 AD near Fateh Sagar.
✦ Day 02
02
— Stage —
Day trip to Kumbhalgarh or Eklingji
Option A — Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur (full day)
Hire a car with a driver (₹3,500–₹5,500 for the day). Drive 2 hours to Kumbhalgarh — a UNESCO-listed hill fort with the second-longest continuous wall in the world. Lunch nearby, then continue to Ranakpur Jain Temple — extraordinary 15th-century marble carving. Return to Udaipur by evening.
Option B — Eklingji and Nagda (half day)
A gentler option closer to town. Eklingji is a working Shiva temple 22 km north, with detailed Mewar-era stonework. Nagda has older ruined temples nearby. Half-day means you can be back for an afternoon at the hotel pool.
Evening — Dinner with a view
Ambrai is so good it's worth a second night. Otherwise, a rooftop at Hanuman Ghat for sunset.
✦ Day 03
03
— Stage —
Saheliyon-ki-Bari, markets, and slow departure
Morning — Saheliyon-ki-Bari
A small but beautiful 18th-century garden built for the queens — fountains, marble pavilions, and lotus ponds. An hour is plenty.
Late morning — Shilpgram (optional) or Sajjangarh
- Shilpgram is a rural arts and crafts village 3 km west, with workshops and craft stalls — better in winter when the artisans are in residence.
- Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace sits on a hilltop above the city and gives you the best wide view of Udaipur. Sunset is busy; mid-morning is quieter.
Afternoon — Markets, packing, and chai
Bada Bazaar in the Old City for textiles, mojaris (curl-toe slippers), and miniature paintings. Bargain politely. Pause for a chai and watch the lanes.
Evening — Last sunset or transfer
If your flight or train is late, one more lakeside sunset at Lal Ghat is the right note to leave on.
